The Dualling of the A66 will be one of the biggest sole infrastructure projects ever delivered in the region. Highways England has committed £1 billion to this project, which will link Cumbria and the Tees Valley.
The £1bn scheme will dual the five remaining single carriageway sections of the route. This is being done in a shortened amount of time and with reduced cost. This is possible thanks to the Chancellor who is personally chairing project speed, so the Government can get on with delivering what the people want on time and on budget, making a difference in their communities.
At Budget 2021, the Chancellor announced a further £135 million to progress A66 Trans-Pennine upgrade.
More broadly, The most recent allocation of core funding to Transport for the North will enable the organisation to continue to play a valuable role in delivering its statutory functions of developing a transport strategy for the region and helping the Department to prioritise, bringing strength of partnership among members to speak to the government with one voice.
