Local MP Peter Gibson has praised the achievements of the 880 charity trustees in Darlington and is encouraging others to consider volunteering their time in the local area by becoming a trustee.

There are 136 charities registered in Darlington, as well as many others operating across the local area. These are all run by trustees, most of whom are volunteers, and who take responsibility for the charity’s crucial work. Without the hard work and dedication of trustees, charities would not be able to provide vital support to the local community.

The MP’s comments come as part of Trustees’ Week, running from 6-10 November 2023, which celebrates the important work of the nearly one million trustees across the UK. The week offers an opportunity to share experiences, as well as engage in a range of training and events to help develop essential trustee skills.

The theme of this year’s Trustees’ Week is ‘Many voices. Working together. With purpose’. Celebrating the individual talents, viewpoints and experiences that trustees bring to their boards, and how a diverse collective of people can help make a charity stronger and achieve its purpose. The campaign also encourages more people to consider what they may be able to give to trusteeship and what they may gain in return.

Helen Stephenson, Chief Executive of the Charity Commission, said:

“People from all walks of life serve their community as trustees of local charities in Darlington. Many of you are volunteers, giving your time and energy to help people, and I extend the Charity Commission’s thanks to you all. Being a trustee is a fantastic way to give something back to your community as well as gain personal fulfilment alongside leadership experience. I encourage others to consider getting involved in this way.”
